Colten Wendel MD FRCSC – General Ophthalmologist
Dr. Wendel is a comprehensive Ophthalmologist with special interest in uveitis, eyelid, and cataract surgery. He has been practicing and serving the residents of the Fraser Valley since 2020.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Dr. Colten Wendel was born and raised outside of Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, on a fish farm. He moved to Chilliwack, British Columbia prior to high school and was accepted into medical school at the University of British Columbia after completing three years of a Biochemistry degree at the University of Saskatchewan. Upon receiving his medical degree with great distinction, he completed his 5-year Ophthalmology residency at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Wendel is board certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). Dr. Wendel participates in various research projects and his work has been published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, and most recently, uveitis publications in cystoid macular edema post-cataract surgery.
Dr. Wendel excelled throughout his residency training with the highest number of cataract surgeries in the history of the University of British Columbia’s residency program.
His work day does not end at five o’clock. Whether he is reading up about the latest surgical techniques or intraocular lenses, or calling patients to follow up on their eye conditions or surgery, Dr. Wendel goes out of his way to give his patients the best surgical experience possible. His attention to detail and caring nature always shine through. Not to mention his upbeat personality! He is an active role model to medical students and residents as a Clinical Instructor with the University of British Columbia.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS & AWARDS
Dr. Wendel has won numerous awards, including the Governor General’s Bronze Medal in 2008, the George & Martha Ivy President’s First Choice Scholarship, and the University of British Columbia Ophthalmology Research Day in 2018. He is a member of the British Columbia Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association, British Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Canadian Ophthalmologic Society, British Columbia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
Outside of work. Dr. Wendel can be found running with his wife and dog, cycling to work, or playing hockey. He is an avid Denver Broncos fan, which has provided some great ammunition for his patients to make fun of him – use it!
